Online Backgammon history started out with BKG 9.8 as the first computer opponent. The system was programmed by Hans Berliner on a PDP-10 on the late 70s as an experiment to evaluate board positions. Then come the first Internet Backgammon Server, which was create by Andreas Schneider in 1993, and hosted on an academic computer in Sweden. Since then, over 100 players with internet connection are found playing at any time. They can now able to save matches, watch and compare playing ability via a rating system. After the successful creation of the Internet Backgammon Server, Frederic Dahl of Norway then created the first commercial neural net backgammon software with Jellyfish.

Currently, playing backgammon online has grown drastically.
