About Backgammon
Backgammon is considered as the oldest games in the world since it is being believed that it is originated in Mesopotamia over 4,000 years ago. Backgammon is a board game that requires two players to compete using checkers and dice. In a backgammon set, it consist of a board, two sets of 15 checkers, two pairs of dice, a doubling cube and a dice cups. Backgammon’s basic rule is “the winning player should be the first one to remove all of their backgammon pieces”. Backgammon is an obstacle course between the two players that must have the skill, strategy and luck to win in this exciting board game.
The backgammon setup is composed of a 12 long triangles called the points and it can be seen on the side of the board. This points can now be the track of the players chips, wherein the beginning to the end point are in the shape of a horseshoe and each points are numbered from 1 to 24. To set up the game board, each of the two players will have two checkers on his 24-point, three on the 8-point, and five checkers each on the 13-point and 6-point. With the said set-up the players will now move their checkers in opposite direction, wherein each of them will move from his own 24-point towards his 1-point. In the board, points 1 to 6 are considered as the home board or the inner boars, and points 7 to 12 are called the outer board. On the other hand, the 7-point is called as the bar point while the 13-point is referred to as the mid point.
After learning the set-up, let us now learn the game proper. To start up the game, each player will now roll one die and the ones who got the higher number will be the first one to move using both the numbers shown, and after that, each player will now move alternately by rolling a die to start each turn. After a player had roll a die, he will now must move is checkers accordingly. A good example of it is if the rolled dice would show a 6 and a 3, the players must move one checker six points forward and another checker three points forward. However, if in any situation the rolled dice would show the same number like a 6 and another 6, the player must play each die twice, meaning with the result he can move up to four times of six points forward each move. However, if a player cannot move either die in a roll, considering his current checkers position, his turn is now over and will be passes to his opponent.
